I’ve been working with different types of products for quite a while now, and most of them require proper protection, especially when dealing with strong chemicals. We often underestimate how intense the reactions can be on your body and skin. I say this from personal experience. Many of these products are toxic, irritating, or sensitizing. So for this reason, my dear friend, I’m going to give you a few tips that might help you be more cautious when working on your projects.
- Gloves. Always.
This is extremely important and not optional at all. Sometimes we naively believe a product won’t affect us (maybe not right away) but with repeated exposure, you might develop an allergy. And that, my friend, is something you definitely want to avoid. I recommend using nitrile gloves instead of latex if you’re working with strong chemicals, since latex can often break down when exposed to certain substances. I even suggest double-gloving if you can, so you have a backup layer of protection.
2. Mask with filter.
If you’re frequently exposed to chemicals, I highly recommend working in open spaces and using respiratory protection. Wear a mask with organic vapor cartridge filters, and make sure to replace the filters according to the instructions.
3. Very good ventilation.
Make sure you’re working in a well-ventilated area. If that’s not possible, I’d recommend using an extractor or working outdoors.
4. Eye protection.
It might not happen often, but splashes can occur. I recommend wearing safety goggles, especially when you’re mixing large amounts or using rotating tools or heat.
5. Proper clothing.
Please don’t make the same mistake I did in the beginning, do not wear your favorite clothes. Use old clothing or an apron you don’t mind getting stained. I personally use a coverall. Resin, silicone, and other substances that land on your clothes will never come off.
6. DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE SYMPTOMS.
If you start to notice eye or throat irritation, rashes, headaches, or any unusual symptoms while working with these kinds of products, STOP. Step outside, check your gear, and do not ignore the signs.
7. Always keep towels and isopropyl alcohol nearby.
In case of spills, keep these on hand and clean up immediately. But please, do not clean these products with your bare hands, even if you’re wearing gloves.
Take care of yourself.
With love,
Palmer.
